Seymour Chwast: Poster P(arts)

You’ve asked for it and we’ve listened!! On December 3rd from 6-9 pm, AIGA is planning a field trip to Spur Gallery for the Seymour Chwast: Poster P(arts) opening reception. Join us for a night of thoughtful discussion and amazing artwork!

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to the AIGA email no later than Monday, November 29th with the attached pdf file filled out. We will register you for the event and we are also organizing a carpool for all of us to arrive together. We are planning on leaving at 5:30 and will meet in the School of Design lobby. Let us know if you would like to carpool.

Color & Gender

We continued our design talks from last semesters “Decolonizing Design”. This time we discussed color and gender, and how to design beyond the gender binary. The inspiration for this topic comes from Ruben Pater’s book “The Politics of Design”

Fall Craft Night

Students joined together to paint pumpkins, make buttons, and do some fun art crafts right before Halloween. This evening event was meant to de-stress and to get to know other students form different majors interested in crafts.

Patch by Patch Workshop

October 15, 2021

Patch by Patch was a crafting event where students created their own patch for the collaborative project created by artist Mia Halton and Julie Kern Smith. "Patch by Patch is about the importance of human connection and its vital role in heightening our defenses, helping us heal, and making it possible for us to endure times of uncertainty."

Alumni Panel

The Fall 2021 alumni panel featured alums Aika San Diego (’20) and Grace Ferreira (’21). Both shared heaps of insightful information regarding finding work during the pandemic, and how the experience worked out for them after graduation. Students also asked questions regarding portfolios and capstone development. Thank you so much for your advice!

Movie Night

The movie night was a way for students to meet new people and gather together to celebrate the full return to in-person classes. Netflix's Abstract Ruth E. Carter episode was played first, followed by Black Panther in which her Oscar winning costume designs came to life on the screen.

In our last event of the spring semester, Graphic Design students gathered to receive advice from upperclassmen for their portfolio reviews. Topics covered include what it is like to do a virtual review, what to be prepared to talk about, and what questions may be asked by the reviewers.

Our spring alumni panel featured the wonderful Amelia Berninger ('17) and Bin Le ('19). Amelia and Bin each talked about their favorite design projects, what it is like working at their jobs, and tips when searching for internships. We all enjoyed the morning chatting with Amelia and Bin and we thank them for sharing so much enlightening advice!

Diversity in Design

March 8, 2021

Students came together on BlueJeans to consider the lack of diversity in the design field and how AIGA can help address it. Topics covered include whether students feel like they are being pushed into singular design, how students themselves can draw upon their individual experiences to decolonize design, and how students can dismantle the matrix of domination in their work.

Collaborative Arts Night

February 11, 2021

In the spirit of National Pizza Day on the 9th, members got together to create a collaborative art print, pizza-style! Attendees each created their own slice of a pizza based on their likes, interests, or creative desires. There are many different slices, but one amazing pizza!

Graphic Design Alumni Panel

November 21, 2020

The last alumni panel was so successful and enlightening that the e-board decided to host another one! This event’s panelists included Alysa Buchanan (’14) and 2020 grads Hailey Guit and Jordan Turner. Topics covered during this panel ranged from applying and attending graduate school, user experience (UX) design, freelancing, and navigating the job market during a struggling economy and global pandemic. We cannot thank Alysa, Hailey, and Jordan enough for spending the afternoon with us!

Portfolio Bootcamp

November 20, 2020

It is that time of year! On November 20th, AIGA members gathered to share and receive advice about fall portfolio reviews that graphic design seniors, juniors, and sophomores participate in at the end of each semester. This bootcamp, e-board members gave tips and tricks that they learned in their own review experiences and answered any questions that members had. The virtual format was discussed, and some members screen-shared their work on BlueJeans to receive feedback on projects.

Photoshop Workshop

October 29, 2020

AIGA members gathered on BlueJeans to learn all about non-destructive editing using masks and layers on Adobe Photoshop. Attendees followed the live tutorial and created spooky skeleton portraits of themselves right in time for Halloween. Knowledge of Photoshop is essential for graphic designers to manipulate their images and create mockups of their work.

AIGA hosted a virtual panel of two amazing Stevenson alumni of the Graphic Design program, formerly known as Visual Communication Design. We were so excited to talk to Sammy Smith (’18) and Hannah Bitzel (’16) and learn about the work they are doing in their design jobs. Sammy and Hannah gave handy advice to members about all things design, from choosing a topic for your senior capstone project to what it’s like working with and designing for clients. Thanks Sammy and Hannah!

Collaborative Arts Night

October 8, 2020

At our bimonthly general meeting, members created drawings of flowers together on BlueJeans, then our president, Becca, combined everybody’s work into one cohesive digital art print. “Grow Together” exemplifies the overcoming of the challenges that COVID-19 has brought, conveying a message of unity despite students being quarantined and isolated from one another during the fall semester.
